Main Discussion Post – Week 2

The Use of Qualitative Approach

My passion is one day receive a PhD in Forensic psychology so I prefer to amend my final project to cover the Effects of Imprisonments of Parents on their Children.

Research Question

Do young people that had or have incarcerated parent(s) have high portions of affected problems past and present?

Research Problem

This narrative research is set out to find the effects of imprisonment of parents on their children. Children whose parents are in prison as well as are neglected as a result may be seriously affected in their mental development or development psychology. Consequently, they are likely to be delinquent in future and even turn to crime (Arthur & Jared, 2009). There is also the problem of how the adolescent may react in regards to the law as they grow up. Some of them may feel betrayed by the law and thus rebel against it; others may become fearful and obey the law unquestioningly (Gibson, 2009).

According to Mathew and William (2009), the imprisonment of parents affects their children. They look at two categories of such children. The first category includes those who receive support from extended family while the second category involves those who do not receive such support. Human beings go through series changes throughout their lives. As individuals go through different stages in life, they acquire newer characteristics through interaction with the environment and through personal maturity.

As a PhD Forensic Psychologist I will need to understand that the effected child will be undergoing various kinds of trauma when attempting to treat them. Adolescents may feel cheated by the legal system and denied parental care in the process. This possibly may manifest itself in various ways including rebellion, delinquency, criminal activity, uncontrolled temper or violence (Maxwell, 2009). One way of dealing with this situation is to explain clearly to the adolescent the reason why the parent has been put into the prison system no matter how grotesque it is. I believe this could help the affected adolescent come to terms with the situation plus cope better with the law (Maxwell, 2007).

However, with anything there will be many different challenges. An example would be children having to start new life with grandparents, foster or first available relative because of parents break law go to prison. There are positive and negative effects on children becoming affected in their mental development. The negative could be if they are neglected by their next living arrangement option. The positive could be they will be well taken care of in the absence of their parents by not undergo being traumatized.

Research Purpose

The purpose of this narrative research is to establish the relationship between imprisonment of parents and traumatic effects on children. The intended purpose could be to articulate the factors that influence the development in individuals. May possibly evaluate the interactions of the individual affected with their environment and how this is able to modulate their psychology.

I would use qualitative research central questions and associated subquestions to involve variables and statistical tests. The questions will be administered to a sample of 100 adolescent respondents. I would choose 18 to 20 year old adolescents because they are in the middle of their development process. Adolescents are individuals who have passed some development stages but still have other stages to go through (Huss, 2008). They will be in an interview protocol and asked one to two central questions following by no more than five to seven subquestions formulated questions would explore their experiences, such as experiences in their childhood and school life (Creswell, 2009). The entire questions will focus on a single phenomenon or concept and would make sure to be open ended to allow for elaborate answers to be qualitative strategy of inquiry. The responses would then be interpreted in categories such as bad and good experiences.

Sampling Strategy and Sample Size for a Qualitative Research Plan

As you continue to work on your qualitative research plan, you will have to address the size and diversity of your sample population. Different kinds of studies require different sample sizes, and you should select a size that will be most appropriate for your topic and approach.

To prepare for this Application:

Review the Chapter 5 readings in Qualitative Research and Evaluation Methods for this week.
Consider the following questions:
From which sampling strategy would your study benefit? What factors contribute to this decision?
What sample size would you use for the study that you are planning? What factors contribute to this decision?
How would you justify using that particular sampling strategy and sample size? What Resources can you cite to support your justification?
What week 8 is about:
Week 8: Data Analysis: Coding

Once you have gathered data from your interviews and observations, the next step in the qualitative research process is to organize the information you have collected. While organizational methods may differ from researcher to researcher, the process of coding data is one that all qualitative researchers should know.

This week, you will work in pairs to hand code interview data that you generated last week by conducting interviews using the questions and protocol you developed. You will then compare your coding with that of your partner to experience how different researchers might code the same data. You will also reflect on how you would like to collect and organize data in your own qualitative research plan, and recommend some data collection and management techniques for your qualitative research plan.

NOTE: For next week’s Application, you will use NVivo to code data for a graded assignment.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this week, you should be able to:

Apply principles of coding to hand-coding data
Compare coding structures and strategies
Recommend data collection and data management techniques appropriate for qualitative research
Some resources teacher wants us to use:
Required Resources

Course Text: Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches
Chapter 8, “Data Analysis and Representation”
In this chapter, Creswell tackles the issue of data analysis by summarizing some of the major approaches to analysis and describing specific analytic procedures that can be used for each of the five approaches. He concludes the chapter by discussing ways that researchers can use qualitative research software (such as NVivo) to facilitate the data analysis process.
Course Text: Qualitative Research and Evaluation Methods
Chapter 8, “Qualitative Analysis and Interpretation”
Patton addresses the challenging process of analyzing the data that has been gathered during a qualitative research study. Specific points of discussion include techniques for organizing data, detecting patterns and determining data significance, and interpreting and reporting findings.
Gibbs, G. R., & Taylor, C. (2005). How and What to Code. Retrieved from
This website is a useful resource that contains additional information about coding. You are encouraged to view the media pieces in the sections on Approaches to Starting Coding and Constant Comparison and to complete Exercise A, which will allow you to practice coding text. If you have time, you also have the option of completing Exercise B.
Software NVivo
This week, consider how a software package can assist a researcher in managing the collected data that needs to be coded and analyzed.

Also this paper has to be Qualitative Research Method… Teacher very picky….

Here is a note from teacher about the research paper I sent you to look over to write paper to flow with,

Teacher says…….. Here are my thoughts.

1. Research problem. Yes, there is lots of quantitative research studying the long term impact of parental imprisonment on juvenile and adult behavior. (the words in bold mean they are part of part of the quantitaitve playing field) This is a quantitative topic. It’s not qualitative. And, there’s lots of quantitative research on this topic. Perhaps, what is missing from the literature is a way to understand the adult child’s experience of parental incarceration.

Problem – this is a gap in the literature regarding the adult child’s experience of parental incarceration.

2. Research purpose: again, wrong playing field 🙁 Looking at a relationship between factors. or the effect of an event on a particular behavior or outcome is quantitative.

Research purpose: To understand the meaning of parental incarceration to an adult child who’s parent(s) were incarcerated during childhood.

3. Research question: the one you posted does not make sense, but the use of the word effect means you are still thinking quant. How about this instead?
